A Team of CBI official will visit violence-marred areas of Assam today to inquire about the incidents. Official sources said that a team of Ministry of Home Affairs will also visit Assam. They are likely to meet senior officials of state government in Guwahati to gather preliminary information. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi requested the Centre to allow CBI to take over all the cases. So far Assam police arrested 170 miscreants for indulging in violence activities and a total of 309 cases have also been registered. Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants set ablaze an office of a student union at Nelibari in Chirang district last night. The death toll has gone up to 75 so far.
Security forces have intensified patrolling at vulnerable areas. 13 columns of the army continued flag marches. Security personnel have been deployed at all the 104 fixed pickets. District administration relaxed curfew in Chirang district for 10 hours from 6 am to 4 pm. The state Group of Ministers has visited relief camps in Chirang, Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts. A team of National Human Rights Commission also visited relief camps and took stock of the relief measures.
So far 1 lakh 30 thousand people have returned to their villages. But around 3 lakh 50 thousand people have taken shelter in as many as 245 camps.
