CBI Special Court in Kerala sentences former IG of Police Lakshmana to life imprisonment

A CBI Special Court in Kerala today sentenced former IG of Police Lakshmana to life imprisonment in connection with the killing of Varghese, a Naxalite who was shot dead in police custody 40 years ago. The court also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees on him. Varghese was shot dead in February 1970 at Thirunelli forests in Wynad district of Kerala. The CBI Special Court had on Wednesday convicted the 75 year old Lakshmana, but acquitted P Vijayan, former DGP of Police, another accused in the case. The confession by the late Ramachandran Nair, the constable who executed the murder and the statement of another constable who was a witness to the murder, became crucial evidence in the case. The CBI investigated the case, following an order by the Kerala High Court.
