CBI raids continue in Adarsh Society scam case

The CBI on Monday continued with its raids in the Adarsh Society scam case. The raids were conducted at Adarsh society office in Mumbai and they started at 6 am. The CBI on Monday started with searches at the residences and other premises of some of the people named in the FIR relating to the scam. The searches were conducted in cities across the country including Patna, Nagpur, Pune and Mumbai, primarily at the properties of promoter of the society R C Thakur, retired Major General M M Wanchoo, former Congress MLC Kanhaiya Lal Gidwani, suspended information commissioner Ramanand Tiwari and former Deputy Secretary P V Deshmukh. Files, laptops, computer hard disks and incriminating documents were seized during the raids, according to CBI sources. The society has been accused of violating environmental norms and of getting the land on the promise that houses would be built for war widows and veterans. However, most of the houses were allotted to politicians, bureaucrats and Army and Navy officers.In Bihar, the CBI team raided the houses of R C Thakur at Patna, Madhubani and Darbhanga pertaining to multi crore Adarsh Residential Society Scam. AIR Patna correspondent reports that the CBI raided Thakur's house in village under Bisfi police station of Madhubani district of the state. The team searched out the houses and interrogated elder brother of RC Thakur. The CBI officials asked him about the members of R C Thakur family. They wanted to know about his son who is a pilot with the Indian Air Force. CBI sources said that nothing of significance was found at his residence. R C Thakur was posted in the Defence Estate office at Colaba in Mumbai. Thakur took voluntary retirement 15 months ago and was general secretary of Adarsh society,which was formed to provide flats to the war widows and heroes of the Kargil war. He is suspected to be a key player in the scam.
