The Home Minister today defended the CBI in Sohrabudin encounter case that happened in Gujarat. Amidst acrimonious exchanges in Lok Sabha, Mr. P. Chidambaram dismissed the opposition allegations that CBI is working on the direction of the Centre for seeking political vengeance. He said that it was the finding of the Gujarat police which said that Sohrabudin was killed in a fake encounter. The Minister said the CBI took over the case on the direction of the Supreme Court and not at the behest of the central government. He called the Opposition's outcry on the issue an outrageous attack against the judiciary and the investigating agency. On the killing of Azad in Andhra Pradesh, the Home Minister said that he was wanted in several crimes by the state police. But even then if the opposition wants a CBI inquiry, it can request the investigating agency through the state government.
