Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite probe into the corruption related cases including the irregularities in AgustaWestland deal. Sources said, the SIT will be headed by the agency Additional Director Rakesh Asthana.

The CBI had already registered an FIR into the VVIP chopper deal on the basis of some important documents that it had obtained from Italian probe agencies in connection with the alleged payment of kickbacks by the AgustaWestland to bag the deal. Recently an Italian court had observed that there is a reasonable belief of corruption in the helicopters deal which was related to purchase of 12 helicopters during UPA rule.

Following this, CBI had again questioned former Air chief S P Tyagi and others last month in the case. The issue had also erupted war of words between BJP and Congress which led to disruption in Parliament during the last session. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had asserted that no one found guilty will be spared in the case.
