The CBI has named 13 people, including former chief minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan, in the Adarsh Society scam in Mumbai. The Agency filed an FIR yesterday giving the names of former Congress MLC Kaniah Lal Gidwani, Retired Major General M M Wanchoo and one of the promoter of the society R C Thakur as the main accused. In a press release, the CBI said the agency registered a case related to Adarsh Society under various sections of IPC including criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and showing forged document as genuine besides sections pertaining to Prevention of Corruption Act. The housing society, built on prime defence land, was constructed by allegedly violating various rules and regulations. The building was originally meant to be a six-storey structure to house Kargil war heroes and their kin but was later extended to 31 floors. The CBI had begun probe in the case after receiving a letter from the Ministry of Defence. Around 10 days ago, the Bombay High Court, while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition, had reprimanded the investigating agency for not filing an FIR. It had directed the CBI to finish the preliminary inquiry within two weeks and decide if it wanted to file an FIR.
