A special CBI court in Mumbai has rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband in a case related to embezzlement of funds by her firm. Special CBI Judge Anis Khan today turned down the plea; paving the way for CBI to arrest Setalvad for questioning.

Immediately after the order was issued, Setalvad said she was shocked and aggrieved by the decision. Setalvad told the court that her sympathisers feel that this is an attempt to intimidate and possibly eliminate her by the powers that be.

Earlier this month, CBI had registered a case against Teesta and her husband Anand Setalvad alleging that their firm Sabrang Communication and Publishing Private Limited – SCPPL had violated the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act by illegally receiving around 2.9 lakh USD or Rs 1.8 crore rupees in foreign donations. According to CBI, Teesta's firm is not registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act for collecting money from abroad.

CBI further claimed that the transfer of foreign contribution to SCPPL can prejudicially affect India's internal security, strategic, scientific and economic interests apart from affecting social harmony.

Rejecting charges of torture and harassment; CBI informed the court that charges against Teesta and her husband were serious in nature and an investigation was necessary to unravel the offence and conspiracy. Meanwhile, Teesta and her husband told the court that they were innocent and were being falsely implicated.
