The CBI on Monday arrested the sacked Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chief Suresh Kalmadi for allegedly awarding a contract for the games to a Swiss company at an inflated rate. He will be produced in a special CBI Court on Tuesday. CBI spokesperson Dharni Mishra told reporters this evening that Kalmadi was arrested for conspiracy to favour a private firm based in Switzerland by awarding contract of timing, scoring and result system at an inflated cost of 141 crore rupees.She said that during the investigation it has been revealed that the organising Committee conspired with the representatives of the private firm in Switzerland and the contract for timing, scoring and result was awarded by eliminating competition to select handpicked officials. AIR correspondent reports that organising committee Secretary Lalit Banot and Director General V.K. Verma have already been arrested. So far eight cases have been registered including two on Queens Baton Relay. This is the fourth time that Kalmadi was questioned by the investigating agency in connection with the scam.In a related development CBI arrested two other senior officials of CWG Organising Committee on Monday. CBI sources said that those arrested are Surjeet Lal and A S V Prasad and have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in awarding contract of timing, scoring and result system to a Swiss firm.
