Cauvery row: Jayalaitha, Shettar to meet today

As per the advise of Supreme Court Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaitha will be meeting Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar today to find an amicable solution to Cauvery river water sharing issue. Tamil Nadu is expected to urge Karnataka to release 52.8 TMC water into Cauvery to save its standing crops.
The Cauvery delta farmers of Tamil Nadu including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the talks between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaitha and her Karnataka counterpart Jagadish Shettar. Samba crop is being cultivated in about four lakh 35,000 hectares in delta districts of Thanjai, Nagai and Tiruvarur. The delta farmers who had lost their Kuruvai cultivation need continuous supply of water till February to save their crops. For that atleast 18,000 cubic feet of water has to be released from Mettur Dam daily so that water will reach the tail-end areas.
