The Bombay Stocks exchange benchmark Sensex today opened in red. The Sensex was trading at 16,798, down by over 79 points when reports last came in. Similarly, Nifty of National stocks exchange was down by over 25 points to quote at 5004.

Oil prices were stable in Asian trade today. New York's light sweet crude was unchanged at 70.69 dollars a barrel. Brent North Sea crude gained 16 cents to 72.05 dollars. The contract will terminate later today. Analysts said dealers weighed recent price falls against a firming US dollar.

The Indian rupee today depreciated by 7 paise to 46.78 against the US dollar in opening trade largely in line with other weak Asian currencies. The rupee had ended one paise down at 46.71/72 against the dollar yesterday.
