The BSE benchmark Sensex that opened 145 points lower today was trading 35 points down at 18,560 points in afternoon deals. The wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index was trading 5 points down at 5,580 points.

Oil prices was mixed in Asian trade today. New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for delivery in August, was down one cent to USD 98.04 a barrel in morning trade. Brent North Sea crude for August delivery rose 14 cents to USD 118.92.

The Indian rupee appreciated by 6 paise to Rs 44.46 per dollar in early trade. The rupee had gained 18 paise to close at 44.53 against the US currency in yesterday's trade.
