The government today said that caste will be canvassed in census without affecting the integrity of the head count.The leader of the House Mr. Pranab Mukherjee told Lok Sabha that how and when this should be done is under consideration. He said that suggestions have been made by leaders and these will be kept in view and an appropriate decision on the mechanism and final decision will be taken by the Union Cabinet. He said that a GOM on the issue had met yesterday and considered the written responses from the political parties.Earlier the House was adjourned till noon following uproar by the opposition over the reported decision of a Group of Ministers to include caste in census at the biometrics stage. The RJD leader Lalu Prasad claimed that the inclusion of caste in census at the bio metric stage amounted to be fooling the people. The JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav said if this is done the exercise cannot be completed in 100 years.Meanwhile the BJP today demanded caste based census on the pattern of head count.Talking to reporters in New Delhi the party spokesman , Mr. Gopinath Munde said that the party does not favour the government's proposal of conducting the census on the basis of bio metric system.Mr. Sharad Yadav also favoured caste based census on door to door basis and rejected the proposal of census through bio metric system.
