Cargo movement at Cochin port hampered due to strike

Container and cargo movement to and from the Cochin Port came to a standstill following a 72 hour token strike called by the Port Workers Trade Union Coordination Committee since midnight. The trade unions are demanding that the Cochin Port Trust should continue container handling and allied activities at Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal at Wellington Island, even after the commissioning of the Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal. Talks held yesterday in Kochi before the Regional Labour Commissioner to avert the strike, failed.
