Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said that the provision for caretaker government system in the constitution will have to be scrapped as the country’s Supreme Court has declared it illegal. Addressing a press conference in Dhaka following her discussions on Monday with the special parliamentary committee drafting amendments to the constitution, Sheikh Hasina said that it was not her personal observation or thoughts but it is the judgement of the highest court of the country which must be complied with. Sheikh Hasina said that her party is in favour of the next elections being held under the supervision of an independent election commission. She also said that the Supreme Court’ s observation that the next two general elections may be held under care taker governments is not mandatory as it was only an observation of the court. Reacting to reporter’s questions about BNP’s reservations of abolishing the caretaker government system, the she said the opposition party can place its opinions before the parliament which will take a final view on the issue.AIR correspondent reports, Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s comments that the caretaker government system should end in accordance with the Supreme Court verdict is likely to trigger of another round of political confrontation with the main opposition party the BNP. Earlier in the month, the Supreme Court declared as illegal the 13th amendment to the constitution that had introduced the existing caretaker government system but said the next tenth and eleventh parliamentary elections “might be” held under the existing system. Following the verdict the BNP leaders have been asserting that they would boycott the general elections if the elections are not held under a care taker government. But with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina making it clear that the next general elections will be held without a caretaker government, the BNP is likely to intensify its agitation against the Awami League government.
