Captain Lakshmi Sehgal, a very close aide of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in Indian National Army died at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh after a long illness. She was 97. She was admitted to a hospital on July 19 following a cardiac arrest.
Her daughter and CPIM leader Subhashini Ali told AIR Allahabad correspondent that the body of Sehgal will be kept today at her old house in civil lines area for people to pay their last respect to the departed leader. She had pledged her body to the Kanpur Medical College and as per her wishes it will be handed over to the hospital authorities on Tuesday. Ali also informed that as per wishes of her mother her eyes would also be donated to the local eye bank.
A doctor by profession and working as a medical practitioner and a social worker Lakshmi Sehgal was ill for some time. She suffered a heart attack on July 19 at her residence. Captain Lakshmi Sehgal was very active in the independence movement. She was awarded of Padma Vibhushan in 1998.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has condoled the death of Captain Sehgal. In his condolence message, Dr Singh said the nation had lost an icon of liberal values and selfless service.
