Can't run new channels to broadcast World Cup matches: Prasar Bharti tells SC

Prasar Bharti today told the Supreme Court that it can't run new channels for broadcasting world cup cricket matches. The apex court had asked Prasar Bharti on Tuesday to respond to suggestions of Star Sports that a new channel can be started by it, for showing world cup matches to ensure that private cable operators do not get the live feed. Meanwhile, the apex Court has reserved its verdict on Prasar Bharti's plea against a Delhi High Court order barring Doordarshan from sharing live feed of World Cup matches with private cable operators. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared for the Centre and Prasar Bharti, had contended that it is mandatory for a private channel under the Sports Act and the Cable TV Network Act to share the feed of matches of national importance with Prasar Bharati for providing it on DD's free-to-air terrestrial channels.
