Cane price arrears for 2014-15 sugar season have now come down by nearly 90 per cent to 2,700 crore rupees. Last year in April the Cane arrear stood at 21 thousand crore rupees. An official release said, several measures taken by the Centre improved liquidity of sugar mills and enabled them to clear cane price dues of farmers. The measures include incentive on raw sugar export, financial assistance in the form of soft loan and waiving off excise duty on ethanol supplied under ethanol blending programme. Besides, a production subsidy provided by the government to sugar mills to offset cost of cane facilitated timely payment of cane price dues.
