Campaigning picks up for BTC polls in Assam

<br/>In Assam, the campaigning for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls has picked up. Most of the major political parties, including the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Asom Gana Parishad and the Congress have geared up their strategies by releasing manifestos. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that altogether 295 candidates are in the fray for the election to the 40-member Council slated for 9th of this month. This will be the second election for the general council of the BTC after its formation in 2003 by an Act in Parliament. The ruling BPF is contesting in all the 40 seats comprising the four districts of Kokrajhar, Udalguri, Baksa and Sirang in lower Assam. The Congress has fielded 23 candidates. The Asom Gana Parishad and BJP combine have put up 17 candidates, among others.<br/><br/> Meanwhile, the State Governor Mr. J.B. Pattanaik arrived in Kokrajhar this morning to supervise the overall law and order situation and arrangements for conducting a free and fair election in the Bodoland Territorial Council. Mr. Pattanaik convened a high-level meeting comprising all the senior administrative, police and Central security officials of the four BTC districts to review the overall poll scenario.
