In Tamilnadu, campaigning is reaching a feverish pitch, with only twelve days left for the elections. Top political leaders including DMK President Mr. M. Karunanidhi, AIADMK Chief Jayalalitha are on their second leg of electioneering addressing road side meetings, from their specially designed campaign vehicles. Our correspondent reports that though two Chief ministerial candidates are contesting from central districts, many state ministers are in fray from Constituencies in southern region. The highest numbers of candidates are Contesting from Tirunelveli district More than 700 candidates are contesting assembly elections from Southern districts. Out of these, 113 candidates are in race in 10 Constituencies of Madurai district alone. The temple town and political hub of southern districts, Madurai is getting into election mood.In most assembly segments in this part of the state, the main battle is between the DMK and AIADMK. However, the Left parties too have some presence Madurai while the BJP has made some inroads into Kanyakumari. The voters, who have been promised freebies by different political parties, seem eager to know the stand of different politicians’ on major issues of this belt. Industrialization of southern districts is one of the key issues in this area. The voters also want a solution of the Periyar Dam and want water level to be increased in the dam, to meet the growing demands of agriculturists.
