In Assam, campaigning for the first phase of polls in 62 Assembly segments came to an end today. Polling for these constituencies will be held on Monday. Altogether 485 candidates, including 38 women, are in the fray.Normal life was partially hit today following a 12-hour 'Assam bandh' called by the ULFA's Paresh Baruah faction. It, however, failed to affect Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh's poll campaign in the state. The Prime Minister addressed two poll rallies at Dhakuakhana and Juria. He expressed confidence that the prospect of resolving the ULFA issue looks bright after his positive talks with the outfit's leaders. He added, there is enough flexibility in the Indian Constitution to fulfill the aspirations of different sections of the people and do justice to them.Assembly poll campaign meetings were held in different parts of the state by the leaders of various political parties with large attendance of people in spite of the Bandh call. Normal life was hit in some parts of the Brahmaputra valley where private long-distance buses kept off the roads and markets remained closed to avoid any untoward incident. However, the bandh failed to affect life in the Barak valley and the two hill districts of the state. Air and train services operated as usual, while the scheduled examinations of universities and colleges were held as per schedule. In the capital city Guwahati shops and markets remained closed in the morning hours but reopened gradually as the day progressed. Private vehicles, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws were plying as usual though private city bus service was thin.ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa-led faction had appealed to the people to boycott the bandh call issued by someone who does not have any existence in the organisation. It said, people should show their stand against aimless killing and violence.
