Campaigning ends for 89 LS seats spread over 7 states & 2 UTs & 119 Assembly seats in AP; Polling tomorrow

Campaigning for the 7th phase of Lok Sabha elections ended last evening. 89 constituencies spread over 7 States and 2 Union Territories will go to polls in this phase tomorrow. These are all 26 seats in Gujarat, 17 in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Punjab, 9 in West Bengal, 7 in Bihar and one each in Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territories of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.

Prominent among them are Sonia Gandhi, Madhusudan Mistry, Capt. Amarinder Singh, Sriprakash Jaiswal and Shankarsinh Vaghela of Congress and Narendra Modi, LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti of BJP. Other prominent candidates include Sharad Yadav of JDU and Farooq Abdullah of National Conference.

119 Assembly constituencies of Andhra Pradesh will also go to polls in this phase.

In Punjab, the Election Commission has restricted the movement of Shiromani Akali Dal leader and State Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia to his polling station area from where he is an electorate. This was disclosed by Chief Electoral Officer of the state VK Singh yesterday.

The Election Commission also ordered transfer of Amritsar Rural SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill following a complaint by Congress against him. The Commission has directed that Mr. Gill should be asked to report to police headquarters at Chandigarh, and Balkar Singh, DIG (Crime) headquarters should take over his work till the completion of poll process tomorrow. The Congress party had demanded the transfer of Gill for allegedly working for the ruling alliance candidate in Amritsar.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission has asked non-residents and non-voters of 14 poll bound constituencies to leave the areas after the end of campaigning. The Commission said, it will also be responsibility of the candidates and their parties to ask their supporters and leaders engaged in electioneering to leave the segments immediately if they are not voter from the concerned constituency. The Commission has directed the law enforcing agencies to intensify the checking of hotels, rest houses, lodges and Dharmshalas to vacate the constituencies from outsiders.

In Bihar, elaborate security arrangements are being made to ensure free and fair polling in the state tomorrow. Chief Secretary Ashok Kumar Sinha said that over 59 thousand security personal are being deployed in 7 Lok Sabha constituencies. Two helicopters will also be pressed into service.

In Gujarat, the Election Commission has made all arrangements for polling in 26 Lok Sabha seats and by-elections of 7 seats of state assembly. Our correspondent reports that all preparations have been completed for free and fair polling.

In Andhra Pradesh, the stage is all set for tomorrow's polling in the 17 lok Sabha and 119 Assembly constituencies of Telangana region.
