In Himachal Pradesh, campaigning has started picking up for the Assembly election on the 4th of next month with central leaders holding public rallies. Leaders of the two main parties the Congress and the ruling BJP have stepped up their campaign to woo the voters and are attacking each other with charges and counter charges, mainly on corruption issue. Addressing a press conference at Shimla, senior BJP leader and leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley accused the Congress state President and former Union Minister Virbhadra Singh of forgery, money laundering and faking income tax records to cover up the kickbacks to the tune of 2.3 crore rupees, he allegedly received from the Steel Industry when he was Union Minister. He demanded an enquiry into the allegations by a special investigation team, SIT.Reacting sharply, Virbhadra Singh described the allegations as baseless and fabricated to create confusion in the minds of the people during the election period. In a statement in Shimla, he said the record pertaining to income tax return will be shown to the appropriate authority as and when asked for. He expressed his surprise how the personal information pertaining to the tax return which are not even provided under RTI Act with the permission of assesses are being highlighted through the media during the peak of election campaign.Senior Congress leader and Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma addressed a rally at Ghumarvi in Bilaspur district. Accusing the state BJP government of patronaging land mafia he said if congress comes to power, it will set up a judicial enquiry commission to probe all the land deals reached during the present BJP government in the state.Meanwhile, the Election Commission has changed the Deputy Commissioners of Shimla and Una after receiving complaints in order to ensure free and fair elections.
