The campaigning for General election in Sri Lanka scheduled for 8th of this month is to end tonight, the Election Secretariat said that all arrangements to ensure a free and fair election have been completed. A total of 7,620 contestants from 36 recognized political parties and 301 independent groups vie for 196 seats in the 225-member parliament. The remaining 29 slots are allocated through the National List based on the vote percentages political parties and independent groups obtain. Sri Lanka follows a proportional system of representation. IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said that a systematic security programme covering all districts will be implemented from the 6th of this month. Police spokesman Prashantha Jayakody said that the military will be on stand-by to assist the 60,000 police already deployed for election-related security duties. "We are intensifying security in areas where there had been more violence," Jayakody said. "The military will not be deployed inside polling booths but they will help us in places where there could be trouble." Meanwhile, General (retd) Sarath Fonseka, who is now in military custody, is set to face two court martials on 6th of April 2010 after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa issued a fresh convening order by nominating three new senior Army officers to the second Court Martial.
