Calcutta HC directs media houses to file affidavits on Mamata’s speech

Taking up a plea for contempt proceedings against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly making derogatory remarks about judiciary, the Calcutta High Court today directed two newspapers and two channels to file affidavits on the authenticity of their reports on her speech.

A division bench of the court issued the order on plea filed by a lawyer. The matter would come up for hearing again after four weeks.
A petition was also filed in the Supreme Court seeking contempt action against the West Bengal Chief Minister for her comments. The petition alleged that Mamata's comments have the inevitable effect of undermining the confidence of the public in the Indian Judiciary as it tends to lower the integrity, reputation and authority of the judicial system.

Meanwhile West Bengal Chief Minister Miss Mamata Banerjee today clarified that her comments were on the value based judiciary, electoral reforms and functioning of media. She said in Kolkata that she pointed out the lacuna in these areas and not personally attacked anyone. Miss Banerjee maintained she sticks to her comments on the subject.
