The Comptroller and Auditor General of India, CAG will complete within three months a comprehensive audit of the Commonwealth Games projects. Talking to AIR, Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai said that the audit will cover all aspects and all institutions involved in the delivery of the games. He said, the CAG auditors will probe 24 departments, 15 of them belong to Delhi government and four to the Organising Committee. He said, about 100 CAG staffers have been roped in for the probe which will look into the purchases related to the Common Wealth Games and agencies responsible for that. Mr Rai said, the CAG will submit its audit report to the government within three months because any delay in the probe will erode its credibility. He said, the report will be confidential and will be shared with Parliament only. Meanwhile, the tenure of senior government officials working with the Organising Committee have been extended till further orders. A decision to extend their tenure was taken at a meeting of the Group of Ministers, GoM on the Common Wealth Games which met in New Delhi on Monday under the Chairmanship of Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy. In a related move, the Central Vigilance Commission has brought purchase of medical equipment and selection of tainted project officers for the sporting event under its scanner. The CVC is already probing at least 22 Games-related construction and procurement works carried out by different government agencies for alleged financial irregularities. The officials from Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax Department are in the final stages of the scrutinising documents that they had obtained about the Games. Sources said, the ED and I-T department are likely to issue summons to senior Commonwealth Games Organising Committee officials soon as part of their probe. Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe into reports of corruption in Commonwealth Games projects. Party spokesperson Tarun Vijay said that the spat between Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and CWG-OC Chief Suresh Kalmadi that has come out in the open only reinforces the public opinion that the main aim of the organisers was to grab money. The Congress said that the Prime Minster has already appointed a committee headed by a former Comptroller and Auditor General, V.K Shunglu to probe the matter. Party Spokesman Manish Tiwari said the Congress will like every body to maintain restraint so that that the committee can discharge its mandate to the satisfaction of the nation.
