CAG asks Telecom department for comments on alleged benefit to Airtel and Aircel

The Comptroller and Auditor General, CAG, has asked the Department of Telecom to reply to its draft report wherein it was alleged that Chennai and Tamil Nadu service areas were hastefully merged resulting in undue benefit of 2,400 crore rupees to Airtel and Aircel. In its draft report, CAG alleged that the merger resulted in undue benefits to telecom operators and denied similar facilities to crores of subscribers in three major states.

In 2004, the then telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran had asked the DoT to merge Chennai service area with Tamil Nadu so that customers were not required to pay roaming charges within a State.
Meanwhile, the CBI has denied sending any unsigned note to Law Ministry seeking its opinion on the issue of including Dayanidhi Maran's name in its charge sheet in Aircel Maxis case. Rejecting media reports that an unsigned note carrying the view of CBI director was sent to the ministry seeking the opinion of law officers, agency spokesperson said this may not be considered an unsigned note but was reproduction of the original noting of the file in order to ensure secrecy.
