Cadaver skin transplantation performed at JIPMER

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, (JIPMER) Puducherry has performed skin transplant harvesting skin from a brain dead patient. This is the first time such a transplant done in a government hospital in the country. <br/><br/>Dr. SC Parija, Director JIPMER said that the skin taken from the dead patient is transplanted to a person with burn injuries and another patient with a chronic no-healing wound. JIPMER is among the few hospitals in the country to have license from the Government of India for Cadaveric Tissue Transplant. <br/><br/>Dr. RK Chitoria who performed the delicate surgery successfully said that madatory protocol was followed throughout process. The transplant could be performed as JIPMER has a Government certified 'Brain Death Committee'.
