Cabinet to withdraw Drugs and Cosmetic (Amendment) Bill, 2013

The Cabinet has decided to withdraw the Drugs and Cosmetics (Amendment) Bill, 2013, which had been introduced in the Rajya Sabha. An official release said, the Bill was examined by the Standing Committee of Parliament which had made a number of recommendations for changing the provisions of the Bill. <br/><br/>Keeping in view the role of the sector in managing public health, it was decided that it will not be appropriate to carry out amendments in the present Act as newer areas of biological, stem cells and medical devices cannot be effectively regulated under the existing law. <br/><br/>An official release said, it has been decided to comprehensively review the existing law to facilitate the ease of doing business and enhancing the quality and efficacy of products. The Health Ministry has undertaken an exercise to frame separate rules under the existing Act for regulating medical devices and to bring out separate legislations for regulating medical devices and Drugs and Cosmetics.
