Cabinet to empower state on 'no retention' policy

Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has said, Union Cabinet will soon take a call on empowering state governments to decide on 'no retention' policy for their respective states.<br/><br/>Attending a program in Guwahati today, he said, 24 states had opposed this policy propagated by his ministry in a recent meeting of Education ministers held in New Delhi. The Minister said that for states which decide to go ahead with the practice of retention, they have to do so in class V or VIII only. He said, moreover, the students must be given two chances to clear the examination – first in March and again, in June.<br/><br/>Stressing on the need to update the curriculum, Mr Javadekar said, the NCERT textbooks are now 10 years old. He said, his ministry will soon ask for suggestions from the teachers community through web portal to update the books.
