Cabinet decides to refer Khap Panchayat issue to GoM

The cabinet today decided to refer the Khap Panchayat issue to a group of Ministers, GoM. Briefing reporters after the meeting, the Information and Broadcasting Minister Mrs. Ambika Soni said that the views of the state government will also be taken on board o n the issue which is related to honour killings. . The Minister said, the government want the so-called honour killings to be effectively brought under the purview of laws of the country. She admitted there is a pressure on the government to bring the amendment in the existing IPC and CRPC to deal with the honour killing in the monsoon session of the Parliament beginning later this month. She also said, there is no difference of opinion. Mrs Soni said, GoM will go into details on the amendments which are to be brought in the existing laws as early as possible.<br/><br/>The Cabinet also gave its green signal for the establishment of Nalanda University. A bill in this regard will be brought in the Parliament in the monsoon session. The proposed university will have school in Buddhist Studies, historical studies, international relations and peace studies, business management in relation to public policy, language and literature and environmental studies. The Nalanda Mentor group chaired by Professor Amartya sen will draft the first statute for the university by August 2010. The setting up of university will facilitate the revival of Nalanda University as a Centre of Excellence in east and south Asia. The University will be set up at the cost of 1005 crore rupees. <br/><br/>The Cabinet has given its approval for raising the authorised share capital of national minorities development finance corporation from 1,000 crore rupees to 1500 crore rupees. The share of the centre will be in tune of 975 crore rupees and that of state will be 390 crore rupees and individual or institution will be 135 crore rupees. 8798 crore beneficiarises will be covered under the MoU during 2010-11. AIR correspondent says that NMDFC is a non-profit company and its schemes are targeted for economic upliftment of people from minority communities living below the poverty line through self-employment.
