Cabinet Committee on Prices meets today; expect to take decisions to contain soaring prices

The meeting of the Cabinet Committee on prices, CCP, will be held today. The meeting, to be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, assumes significance and it is expected to take decisions on increasing the availability of sugar and other commodities, to contain food inflation, which has soared to a decade's high of 20 per cent, in the first week of December. The meeting was scheduled to be held on Tuesday evening but was postponed.The Agriculture Minister, Mr. Pawar, has already said that his ministry could move the proposal for allowing raw sugar, lying in Kandla Port, to be processed in UP mills. His Ministry has also proposed off-loading of more wheat in the open market. Meanwhile, reacting to the alleged criticism of the Agriculture Minister, for the steep rise in sugar prices, the National Congress Party, NCP, spokesman, Mr. D.P. Tripathy said that Mr. Pawar cannot be solely held responsible for the rise in sugar prices. He said, increase in sugar prices is caused due to the low production.
