The government has given its green signal for the commencement of phase II of the unique project aimed at providing UID numbers to all residents of the country.The Cabinet Committee on Unique Identification Authority of India related issues gave the approval for the funding to the tune of 3023 crore rupees at its meeting held in New Delhi on Thursday morning. This will meet the cost of issuing ten crore UID numbers by March next year and the recurring establishment cost for the entire five years phase of the project.The first set of unique identification,UID number is expected to be issued between August this year and March next year. 600 million UID numbers are expected to be issued within the next three years after March 2011.The UIDAI proposes to collect the demographic and biometric details of the residents through various central and state government agencies.AIR correspondent says that the landmark UID project which was established last year is aimed at ensuring inclusive growth by providing form of identity to those who do not have it. The UID numbers to all the marginalized sections of society will enable better delivery of services, effective governance and strengthen equity. ‘
