Cabinet clears equity infusion of <img src="rs.png" border="0" height="10"> 1,200 cr in Air-India

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Thursday approved an equity infusion of 1,200 crore rupees into Air India. According to an official press release, this decision will not only ease the cash flow situation of the Company but also preclude borrowings from markets at high cost. The release says Air India&apos;s present paid up equity is not sufficient for an aviation company of its size. The Group of Ministers in its meeting held yesterday took a series of decisions to put the national carrier on sound rails. They include rationalisation of the wage costs, setting up of support business of ground handling and cargo.In yet another decision, the CCEA decided to revive five units of Fertilizer Corporation of India. The approval was granted on the recommendations of the empowered committee of secretaries. According to an official press release, the revival of these closed fertilizer units will enable leveraging of existing land and assets of the units to the optimum use and facilitate increased production of urea domestically. The release says, revival of closed units will ensure availability of fertilizers nearest of the consumption centres contributing agriculture development in the area.In another decision, the CCEA approved the payment of statutory dues, salary and wages in ten loss making central enterprises under the department of Heavy Industry. A budgetary support of over 53 crore rupees has been given to these units to achieve the goal of revival of these units and mitigate the hardships of employees.In another important decision, the CCEA approved a special scholarship scheme for Jammu and Kashmir to encourage the youth of the state to pursue higher studies outside their state. The total cost of the scheme will be 1,200 crore rupees and 88 crore rupees will be incurred on the scheme in the current fiscal. An official release says, it is proposed to provide 5,000 fresh scholarships every year over the next five years. Of these 4,500 scholarships will be for general degree courses and 250 each for medical and engineering studies. The release says every scholar will get thirty thousand rupees per year for tuition fees for general degree courses and up to 1.25 lakh rupees for engineering and three lakh rupees for medical courses. In addition to these, hostel fees and incidentals will also be given for all categories of courses up to a ceiling of one lakh rupees annually.
