The Cabinet today approved the Criminal Law Amendment Bill. Meeting under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Cabinet accepted the recommendations of the Group of Ministers, headed by P. Chidambaram on the bill. As per recommendations, the clause on sexual assault has been defined as rape, thereby limiting the offence to women victims. The first crime will be treated as a bailable offence while next one will be non-bailable. Also the age of consent has been reduced from 18 to 16 years.
