C P Narayanan as Political Secretary of Kerala CM

In a rebuff to Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, CPI-M state committee has stuck to its choice of party ideologue C P Narayanan as his Political Secretary, ignoring the former's reservations. The decision was taken at a meeting of the committee at Thiruvananthpuram on Wednesday which was also attended by Achuthanandan. The post of Political Secretary to Chief Minister, always held by a key partyman to co-ordinate between the party and the government, fell vacant in March after incumbent K N Balagopal was elected to the Rajya Sabha. The party had then proposed C P Narayanan, state planning board member and editor of ideological journal 'Chintha' for the post. This was openly cold-shouldered by Achuthanandan putting the appointment on hold for over two months. However, despite Achuthanandan's pleas to the central leadership, the Vijayan group refused to budge and got Narayanan's candidature endorsed when it met in the last two days.
