By-poll results: Congress bags Puducherry seat; BJP ahead in Assam; CPI(M) wins in Tripura

Counting of votes is being held for 4 Lok Sabha and eight Assembly Constituencies, spread across six States and one Union Territory where by-election were held on Saturday.<br/><br/>The Lok Sabha seats are Lakhimpur in Assam, Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh and Coochbehar and Tamluk Parliamentary seats in West Bengal.<br/><br/><br/>The Assembly seats are in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Tripura and the Union Territory of Puducherry.<br/><br/><br/>In Puducherry, Chief Minister and Congress candidate V Narayanasamy has won the Nellithope by-poll with a margin of 11,144 votes and secured 18709 votes, while his nearest rival and AIADMK candidate Om Sakthi Sekar could muster only 7565 votes. None among the other six candidates could claim more than a two digit figure.<br/><br/>Chief Minister Narayanasamy bagged the Nellithoppe Assembly seat with a thumping majority. Narayanasamy who was not a member of the Puducherry Territorial Assembly was sworn as Chief Minister in June last. Congress high command favoured Narayanasamy for the post as there were more than two contenders. In a fiercely contested election, Narayanasamy's main election plank was his achievements in the last five months as Chief Minister. <br/><br/>It was projected that his long experience in government and his relationships cutting across party lines would help in the Union Territory's progress. Narayanasamy represented the Union Territory in Rajya Sabha for three terms and Lok Sabha for a term. He held various offices in party and Government. Narayanasamy was Minister of State in Prime Ministers Office in UPA II.<br/><br/><br/>In Assam, the BJP candidates are leading in Lakhimpur Lok Sabha and Baithalangsu Assembly seats. Five candidates are in the fray for the Lakhimpur seat, while political fate of three candidates will be decided at Baithalangso assembly seat. <br/><br/><br/>In West Bengal, Trinamool Congress candidates are leading in two Lok Sabha constituencies and one assembly seat when reports last came in. In Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat, Partha Pratim of TMC is leading over his BJP rival Hem Chandra Burman. <br/><br/>In Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, TMC candidate Dibyendu Adhikari is leading over CPM rival Mandira Panda. In Monteswar assembly seat, TMC candidate Saikat Panja is leading over its CPM rival Osman Gani Sarkar.<br/><br/><br/>In Tripura, ruling CPI(M) led Left Front won both the assembly constituencies, Barjala and Khowai bye elections held on 19th November. CPI(M) snatched Barjala seat from Congress. Interestingly, BJP also performed well by advancing its position to the 2nd, compared to 2013 assembly polls. CPI(M) contestant Jhumu Sarkar secured 15769 votes, whereas his next rival BJP contestant Sistamohan Das secured 12395 votes.<br/><br/>Khowai, a CPI(M) bastion for long years, has gone to the pocket of the party. There, CPI(M) contestant Biswajit Datta secured 24810 votes and his nearest contestant TMC's Manoj Das got 8716 votes. BJP has got 3rd position securing 2528 votes. Congress in both seats got down to 4th position. There were around 39,000 voters in each constituency.<br/><br/>In Tamil Nadu, ruling AIADMK has swept the polls held in three Assembly constituencies Thanjavur, Aravakurichi and Tiruparakundram last Saturday. AIADMK has won the Thanjavur seat and have taken winning lead in the other two constituencies. <br/><br/>Ruling AIADMK party cadre members went on spontaneous celebrations with fire crackers and sharing of sweets all over Tamil Nadu. AIADMK candidate M Rengasamy has won the election in Thanjavur. Former AIADMK Minister, V Senthil Balaji in Aravakurichi and A K Bose in Tiruparakundram have taken a winning lead.<br/><br/> The counting of votes in Aravakurichi was delayed as agents of candidates protested. The Assembly elections in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi which were to be held on May 16 got postponed by election commission after huge seizure of unaccounted money by flying squads. <br/><br/>The bypoll in Tiruparankundram was conducted as AIADMK candidate Seenivel died soon after winning the Assembly election.
