By-elections: Peaceful, moderate polling reported to three LS, 33 Assembly constituencies across nine states

Peaceful and moderate polling has been recorded in today's by- elections in the parliamentary constituencies of Medak in Telangana, Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh and Vadodara in Gujarat and in 33 Assembly constituencies in nine states.

In Uttar Pradesh, polling in one Loksabha seat of Mainpuri and eleven Vidhan Sabha seats concluded peacefully.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ramakant Pandey said that 53.18 percent voters exercised their franchise in the assembly polls while 56.4 % votes were pollled for Mainpuri Loksabha seat.

The polling picked up in the second half today.

Talking to AIR, Pandey said that polling has been peaceful and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere.

AIR Lucknow correspondent reports, the highest poll percentage in this by poll was recorded at Thakurdwara assembly constituency in Moradabad where over 70% voters exercised their franchise whereas Noida and Lucknow East, both lagged far behind with 32 and 34 % respectively.

Bharatiya Janata Party has lodged complaints against ruling Samajwadi Party for violation of model code of conduct alleging mal-practices including booth capturing in the polling.

Party has also lodged complaints against the local administration in different districts.

BJP and Samajwadi party both have claimed that they are going to win all the assembly seats at the stake.

But who is the choice of the voters will be known to all on 16th September, the day of judgement.

In Rajasthan, polling has ended peacefully in the bye- election of four Assembly Constituency .

According to initial information above 66% voting has been reported.

Maximum 70% vote were polled in Nasirabad while 69.8% polling reported from Suraj Garh at Weir 62% and Kota South 61.7% polling reported.

In Gujarat, moderate polling has been recorded for the by-elections of Vadodara Loksabha seat and 9 seats of state Assembly on Saturday.

Polling was completed peacefully barring few incidents of bogus voting and several complaints of violation of election code of conduct. According to sources, over 50 percent turnout was recorded .

Apart from Vadodara Loksabha seat, nine assembly seats which went for polling were Deesa, Maninagar, Tankara, Khambhaliya, Mangrol, Talaja, Anand, Matar and Limkheda (ST).

Vadodara Loksabha Seat and Maninagar Assembly seat were vacated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while other 8 assembly seats were vacated following BJP MLAs elected for Loksabha.

AIR Ahmedabad correspondent report that with today’s polling, the fate of 49 candidates have been sealed in Electronic Voting Machines EVMs for one Lok-sabha and nine Assembly seats in the state. Counting of votes will be taken up on 16th September.

In Telangana, over 63 percent polling was recorded in Medak Parliamentary constituency till last reports came in.

The polling was by and large peaceful.

In all 14 candidates were in the fray for this Lok Sabha seat, but the major fight was between three main contesting parties-the ruling Telangana Rashtriya Samithi, the congress and BJP,supported by the Telugu Desam party.

The bypoll was necessitated due to resignation of Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao from the seat.

Bypoll was also held for Nandigama(SC) Assembly constituency in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh where over 60 percent polling was recorded till last reports came in.

The vacancy for this Assembly seat was caused by untimely death of elected MLA.

In Assam, peaceful polling has been reported at Silchar, Lakhipur and Jamunamukh constituencies.

Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, P K Doley said that around 67 percent polling has been reported in the by polls.

Jamunamukh constituency has recorded 71 percent voting while Silchar has reported 63 percent voting.

Lakhipur constituency has recorded 66 percent of voters’ turnover.

A total of 25 candidates are in fray including the Congress, BJP and AIUDF.

Asom Gana Parishad has not fielded candidates in the by poll.

Doley also said that the state Election Department has sought a report from the concerned officer on the alleged malpractice at a polling booth in Jamunamukh constituency as reported by a section of media.

Meanwhile, Congress has lodged a complaint to the Chief Election Officer against BJP for allegedly violating model code of conduct by publishing advertisement today.

In West Bengal, over 63 per cent polling was recorded at Bashirhat South and Chowringhee assembly seats bye-elections today.

The Chief Electoral Officer Mr. Sunil Gupta told Saturday evening that polling was by and large peaceful barring a few minor incidents. Three electronic voting machines which developed technical snag, had to be replaced .

One Presiding Officer in Basirhat South constituency was removed from duty on charges of slow polling.

In Sikkim, over seventy nine percent turnout recorded in Bye – election to Rangang- Yangang Assembly seat in south district concluded peacefully on Saturday.

More than nine thousand exercised their franchise through around twenty electronic voting machines.

The counting will be held on 16 September next week .

“The fate of five candidates from various parties including two Independents for Rangang – Yangang seat in Sikkim have been captured in electronic voting machines.

Besides the elaborate security arrangement to ensure free, fair and peaceful election this time, the strict implementation of model code of conduct by the Election Commission was also visible at polling stations in south district. “
