The Bangladesh High Court on Sunday ruled that that no woman can be forced to wear veil or burqa in the educational institutions and offices. The two judge bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Zakir Hossain issued the order on Sunday following a an application by two Supreme Court lawyers about a news report carried by a Bengali newspaper which said that Burqa mandatory at Rani Bhabani Mahila College. According to the news item the Principal of the college in Natore had stopped any cultural activities and sports at the college and forced female students to wear burqa’s or veil in the college. The HC directed the Principal to appear before the HC bench on August 26 to explain the matter. The court also issued a notice to the government to explain why imposition of restriction on cultural activities and sports in the educational institutions and offices and forcing the female students to wear veil should not be declared illegal.
