The Budget Session of Parliament came to a close today. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have been adjourned sine die after completing mainly the financial business. AIR Parliamentary correspondent reports that there was an acrimony over diverse issues. A highlight of the over month long session was the setting up of the Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the alleged 2G spectrum scam. The Lok Sabha speaker Mrs. Miera Kumar in her remarks at the end expressed satisfaction over the successful transaction of the business during this session. She said that the Lok Sabha lost over 25 hours due to interruptions followed by adjournments. However, the members made up for the lost time by sitting late for more than 26 hours. The Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari said in his concluding remarks that the house lost 20 hours due to interruptions. Members partly compensated the loss by sitting late for over 12 hours. A high point of the session was the hot debate between the government and the Opposition over the alleged cash-for-votes scam in the wake of a WikiLeaks report. The two houses adopted motion of thanks on the president's address to the joint sitting of parliament and the finance bill 2011. Some legislations were passed and some others introduced in the two houses. The evacuation of Indians from troubled Libya, radio collaring of Indian students in an American university, the Income Tax notice to Gujarat Government and attacks on Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan navy also figured prominently in Parliament. This is one of the shortest Budget session of Parliament in the recent years. The first part of this session was extended till today and second part was cancelled in view of the assembly elections in the five states.
