No fresh taxes, thrust on developing infrastructure, hike in financial assistance to weaker sections of society are among some of the highlights of the Budget for 2011-12 presented in the Puducherry Assembly on Wednesday. Chief Minister Mr N. Rangaswamy, who also holds the finance portfolio, in his budget speech said the government has given importance to social and community sectors to achieve an inclusive growth. He said the out lay for the present fiscal has been pegged at 4830 crore rupees. Outlining the steps to encourage investments in the union territory, the chief minister said a new industrial policy will be unveiled shortly and announced that a Special Economic Zone in the Information technology sector will be established in Puducherry. He said M.L.A’s Local Area Development Fund is being enhanced to 2 crores from the present 1 crore rupees. Mr Rangaswamy announced a a new pension scheme for Ulemas of registered mosques and hiked financial assistance to differently abled students, fishermen and people belonging to SC and ST’s.
