Buddha Purnima is being celebrated today. It not only marks the day when Gautam Buddha was born but also the day when he attained Nirvana under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.  Lord Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama on the full moon day in 563 BC at Lumbini in Nepal. In Hinduism, Buddha is considered as the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu. It was on this day that Gautam Buddha was born, achieved enlightenment and died.<br/><br/>Central government is organising a grand event at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in the national capital to mark the occasion.<br/><br/>The function will be attended by cabinet ministers, including Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Mahesh Sharma and Minister of State for Human Resource Development Upendra Kushwaha.<br/><br/>President, Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion.
