BSNL, MTNL improve their financial conditions under current govt: Prasad

Communication and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad today said that the BSNL and MTNL which were loss making telecom companies in the past, have improved their financial conditions under the current government. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Prasad said that BSNL which had reported over 10 thousand crore rupees profit in 2004-05, incurred a loss of over eight thousand crore rupees in 2014-15. He said, BSNL has earned an operating profit of 672 crore rupees and its income form services has grown up by 4.16 per cent. <br/><br/>On MTNL, the Minister informed that the company had incurred a loss of around 2900 crore rupees in 2014 and now it has earned a profit of nearly 25 crore rupees. He said, the government is committed to improving the financial condition of the two companies. On the issue of call drop, Mr. Prasad said, his Ministry has accorded high priority to quality services of these two companies. He said, over 94 thousand new Base Transceiver Stations are being installed in the country to improve the network connectivity. He also said, there is currently no proposal to merge BSNL and MTNL.
