BSE Sensex gains 84 points in opening trade

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex gained over 84 points in opening trade today, snapping a four-session losing streak. The 30-share index of the Bombay Stock Exchange, which has lost over 228 points in the previous four sessions, recovered by 0.45 per cent, to 18,350 in the first few minutes of trade. The wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index regained the 5,500 points level by rising over 27 points to 5,510. Brokers attributed the rise in select stocks to fresh buying by funds and retail investors, driven by a firming trend on other Asian bourses. Japan's Nikkei index was trading point 16 per cent higher, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose point 27 per cent in early trade today. The US Dow Jones Industrial Averaged ended point 01 per cent higher in Monday's trade.
