The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today fell by 73 points in the opening trade. This follows cues from other Asian bourses. The 30-share index, which had lost nearly 430 points inthe previous two sessions, moved further down by 0.43 per cent to 16,762.55 points. IT, banking, metals and oil and gas stocks remained weak on continued selling by funds. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also eased by 24.40 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 5,036. Brokers said selective selling by foreign funds amidmixed trend on the other Asian bourses mainly put pressure on the trading sentiments. Strong earnings posted by engineering giant Larsen &Toubro for the January-March quarter, however, gave some support to the market and capped the losses.
