Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad has directed officials to conduct a survey of manual scavengers in 110 villages that were included into the Corporation area today. He has also asked them to prepare a report on sanitary line work status in these villages. The Commissioner noted that manual scavenging is banned in the country and the officials have to put an end to such practice if it prevails in these villages. He has also instructed them to rehabilitate such persons still engaged in such prohibited work and engage machineries to clean the sanitary line. 201 manual scavengers were identified during the manual scavengers' survey in 2013 in the Corporation limits in the city. Later during a survey in eight zones of the Corporation, 1139 manual scavengers were identified. The Commissioner today directed the officials to pay all of them the compensation allocated by the Central Government, look into the schooling needs of their children and enlist them under housing schemes to provide them with houses.
