Previously secret British Government papers just released in London showed that British diplomats believed in 1980s that Israel was ready to use a nuclear weapon against its Arab neighbours in the event of a war breaking out despite the Israelis signing a peace treaty with Egypt a year before. A cable from the British Embassy in Tel Aviv in May 1980 warned what it called the Israeli's mood of isolation and defiance was growing.
