Britain has decided to provide aid worth one billion pounds to Bangladesh over the next four years to support programmes for reducing poverty, strengthening education, other social sector projects and to address issues related to Climate Change. This was disclosed by visiting British Minister of State for International Development Mr. Alan Duncan in Dhaka today. Mr. Duncan held discussions with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister A.M.A Muhith as part of his tour to Bangladesh which also included visits to some of the projects being implemented with the British aid. During the discussions with Mr.Alan Duncan, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought the support of United Kingdom in implementing the government’s initiatives to fight militancy and terrorism. Addressing a press conference in Dhaka on the completion of his tour, Mr. Duncan emphasized the need for political parties in Bangladesh to move away from confrontation politics and focus on strengthening democracy, improving governance and curbing corruption.
