Britain is to cut the number of visas for foreign students in an attempt to stop the abuses of the system. In 2009 about two hundred and eighty thousand came into the country on student visas.

The changes are expected to come into effect in weeks. Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown ordered a review at the end of last year after concern that the present system is being abused. The Government would now insist that the potential students should have decent level of English before they get visas. The regulations will also limit the number of hours students can do paid work while in Britain. And there will restrict permission for their dependents to accompany them. Although no target has been set by the Government , the changes are expected to mean that the number of students getting visas is reduced by tens of thousands.
