Brisk polling is underway for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections. Voting is taking place for six Lok Sabha constituencies in North Eastern states in this phase.
Of these, two seats each are in Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya and one each in Manipur and Nagaland. Voting for the lone contituency in Mizoram, which was also scheduled for today, has been postponed till Friday due to a 72 hour bandh call which began today.
Polling is also taking place for 49 Assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh.
In Nagaland, brisk and peaceful polling is underway to elect the lone Lok Sabha member from the state. In the second phase of the Parliamentary elections , 56 percent of over 11 lakh 82 thousand registered electorates in Nagaland, had cast their ballots till 11 AM. Today’s polling will decide the political fortunes of three-time Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Mr. Rio is pitted against Former Minister and NPCC president K V Pusa and Akhie Achumi of Socialist Party (India).
However, polling is yet to begin in a disputed area under Longleng district of Nagaland bordering Assam where security forces from Assam have prohibited entry of polling officials and setting up of a polling station. Longleng Superintendent of Police, James said tension was prevailing along the border area between Yanglok and Ladaigarh villages after Assam Police along with CRPF personnel prohibited the entry of polling officials and setting up the Ladaigarh Polling Station No. 1 under 49 Tamlu Assembly Constituency in the district.
Ladaigarh polling station with an electorate of 302 is located at the government lower primary school, which has been occupied by Assam Police since 2007 despite a Supreme Court order to maintain status quo.Our correspondent reports that Nagaland today witnessed vibrant expression of democracy as the insurgency-hit state witness brisk and peaceful polling today.
Encouraged by clear sky and fine weather condition, large numbers of voters irrespective of age flocked to the polling centers to exercise their democratic franchise even well before polling started at seven this morning.
Over 36 thousand young voters in the age group of 18 and 19 years are also exercising their franchise for the first time . Dressed in colourful attires, young enthusiastic voters are seen standing in long queues while others excitedly flashed their marked fingers as they came out after casting their vote.
Among the prominent voters, Governor of Nagaland Ashwini Kumar and his wife cast their votes early this morning from a polling booth in Kohima Town.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio who is also a candidate for this Lok Sabha Election, exercised his franchise from Northern Angami -2 constituency in Kohima district.
In Meghalaya, peaceful voting is on for the two Parliamentary constituencies , Shillong and Tura. Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said that 39 percent voting has been recorded till 1.00pm in the afternoon.
Polling began from 7.00am in the morning today Our correspondent reports that voters were seen standing in long queues in front of polling stations at Laban, Rynjah, Laitmukhrah and Nongrim Hills in shillong to cast their votes. In many of these polling stations, the queues of female voters were longer than the male voters.
No untoward incident has been reported and a strict vigil is being maintained by security forces. A total of 10 candidates are in the fray, eight for the Shillong seat and two candidates for the Tura seat. More than 15 lakh 67 thousands are registered as voters.

Polling has been brisk to heavy and peaceful in Arunachal Pradesh since 7 AM today, according to reports from the Offices of State CEO and IGP. Over 25 per cent votes have been polled in the State till 1-30 PM this afternoon, the State Chief Electoral Officer, Chandra Bhushan Kumar told AIR.
Polling process has been suspended in a few booths in Kurung Kumey district due to stray incidents of damaging EVMs, he said.
