An estimated 20.9 per cent of the electorate cast their votes in the first three hours of polling for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland today. Around 20.9 per cent of the total 11,77,572 voters have turned up to cast their vote in the first three hours. Voting started at 7 AM.
Kiphire district has seen the highest turn out till 10 AM with 32.59 per cent while Peren district is lowest at 5 per cent, officials said. Voting in taking place peacefully in all the districts, except the disputed area belt between Assam and Nagaland at Ladaigarh Polling Station No. 1 located at Government Primary School, Tamlu sub-division Longleng district.
As per reports, eleven per cent electorate cast their votes till 10 AM for the two Lok Sabha seats and 49 out of 60 Assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh.The turnout of voters during the morning hour was moderate, deputy chief electoral officer told news agencies.
Inclement weather due to overnight rain could not dampen the spirit of the electorate, as many voters were seen standing in queues in the polling stations since 6 AM, an hour before start of polling.A significant turnout of women and youth, especially,first timer voters was recorded in majority of the polling booths.
Polling remained peaceful without any incidents of violence reported from any part of the state. All the inter-state check gates have been sealed till 5 PM to prevent entry and exit of people. Meghalaya witnessed ten per cent of the voters exercising their franchise till 9 AM for the two Lok Sabha constituencies.
Defying a 12-hour bandh called by a banned separatist group in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region, voters turned out more in urban areas compared to rural areas, Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said.
Governor Dr K K Paul cast his vote in the early hours. Security in all hyper-sensitive and sensitive polling stations across the state has been beefed up.The Indo-Bangladesh border has been sealed and additional BSF forces have been deployed at the border areas especially where polling stations are located, he said. About forty per cent of 9 lakh voters have already cast their votes in the the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency till midday, electoral officials in Imphal said.
People dressed in traditional attire were seen in queues before polling booths in all the five hill districts of Ukhrul, Senapati, Chandel, Tamenglong and Churachandpur, where central security forces have been deployed in strength. A total 10 contestants from BJP, Congress, Trinamool Congress, Naga People's Front, NCP, JD(U) and Aam Admi Party, besides three independents are in the fray.
The candidates whose fate is being decided today are sitting Congress MP Thangso Baite, Gangmumei Kamei (BJP), C Doungel (NCP), Kim Gangte (TMC), Soso Lorho (Naga People's Front), L Gangte (JD-U) and M K Zou (AAP).The last phase of polls in the state will be held on April 17 for the Inner Manipur seat.
